Focussing closer on our own planet, we will learn about how the Earth rotates and how this links to day, night and the seasons. Looking further, we will explore how the moon orbits the Earth. All of our knowledge will then be supported by an in-school visit from the astrodome. Completing our Learning Experience, we will create child-led enquiries into space, exploring areas of interest within the class.
For more information about the curriculum objectives we will be covering, click on the link below.
Today we had an astrodome visit in school to teach us some more interesting facts about space! Once we were inside, amazing images and videos of space were projected around the inside walls of the dome!
In our third lesson of this Learning Experience, we researched the movement of the moon and created diagrams to show what we found.
We looked at the Earth's rotation and this impact this has on our seasons.
Today we researched and created diagrams of our Solar system.
Term 2
This term we will be covering Fresh Prince of Bel Air in music, Country Study in geography, Properties of Materials in science and Health and First Aid in PSHE. In maths, year 6 will be focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages, and year 5 will be focusing on fractions, multiplication and division. In English we will be writing to entertain, taking inspiration from our class books Tyger and The Highwayman. In PE we will be continuing swimming and invasion games.
Properties of Materials - Science
During this learning experience we will be exploring the properties of materials. To start, we will begin by looking at the properties of some materials, comparing and grouping materials based on characteristics such as hardness, solubility and conductivity. We will also look out how these materials can be used for everyday items, and which materials are more suitable for specific purposes. Continuing on, we will explore solubility and solutions and discuss reversible and irreversible change through dissolving and mixing. Finally, we will be investigating the new materials created and how to separate mixtures.
For more information about the curriculum objectives we will be covering, click on the link below.
To test irreversible changes, we planned and tested an experiment where we looked at how much gas we could produce using bicarbonate soda and vinegar to inflate a balloon.
In this lesson we looked at reversible changes and how we can separate materials through sieving, filtering and using magnets.
Today we were looking at soluble and insoluble materials.
Country Study - Geography
During this learning experience, we will be covering the geographic curriculum objectives with a focus on trade and export. To begin, we will be looking at a world map locating important countries in global trade and the routes that connect them. Then we will be focusing closely on different cities and their exports. We will continue to analyse these through their climate zones and natural resources. We will then look at how all of this and industry, have had an impact on land use over time. We will be ending the learning experience with a visit to the London Docklands Museum, as well as creating our own trade project.

Today we visited the London Museum Docklands!
In this lesson, we looked at time zones. We investigated what they are, how we use lines of longitude and latitude and how this all affects trade.
We used our knowledge of global trade to compare 3 regions in the world.
In this lesson, we idneitifed the different climate zones around the world and what can be produced in specific climates for trade.
Today we looked at the countries in the world and the top routes for trade.
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air - Music
For our first Learning Experience this term we will be using our new music subscription "Charanga" to learn all about The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. This will include appraising similar and contrasting music, recreating and following the pulse, performing with our new glockenspiels and composing our own short song.
Term 1
To begin our first term of the year, we will be covering App Design in computing, Anglo-Saxons - Scots in history, Product Design in DT and Aspirations in PSHE. In English our class books this term are Wonder and the Viewer, which we will be using to inspire our writing. In PE we will be swimming and taking part in invasion games. In maths we will be looking at place value, as well as addition and subtraction across both year groups.
Aspirations - PSHE
This week we are looking at what is meant by aspirations. We will begin by thinking about the different stereotypes there are when it comes to roles and how we can ensure everyone has a chance to be who they want to be. We will then be exploring a number of different jobs and the skills and attributes they require to be successful. We will be thinking about our own goals and achievements, and what steps we may need to take to achieve this. As well as our learning, we will be visited by a variety of individuals who can share their own jobs and stories of how they have achieved this.
Lucy is an accountant who has had the opportunity to travel around the world. So far, she has been to 51 countries and has now moved from the UK to Australia!
Dan Abnett is a local author who has written many comics and novels. He has written many times for Marvel, DC and Doctor Who!
Forces - Science
For our next learning experience, we will be learning about how different forces work. In order to do this, we will be carrying out three investigations, identifying the effects of friction, water resistance and air resistance on moving objects. During these investigations, we will plan and conduct our own experiments in groups, ensuring we complete a comparative fair test each time. To finish, we will explore the impact that levers, pulleys and gears can have on forces, as well as conducting research on the fascinating Heath Robinson and Rube Goldberg machines.
For more information about the curriculum objectives we will be covering, click on the link below.
Using our learning on mechanisms, we used our loose parts area to create levers, pulleys and gears.
Today we conducted our water experiments!
Today, we watched a friction experiment, discussing the different parts of the planning process. We then used this to help us plan our own water resistance experiments.
Product Creation - DT
During our third learning experience, the children will be creating marble games/mazes for a specific purpose (entertainment) and the audience of their choosing. We will start by carrying out research to design a product for the intended purpose and explore which features appeal to the target audience they chose. Using this information, using exploded diagrams, we will design, sketch and create prototypes of their products. Finally, we will create the games before evaluating the final product to ensure they have met the design brief.
For more information about the curriculum objectives we will be covering, click on the link below.
Once we had made our changes to our designs, we began building our marble runs and mazes.
Today we made a prototype of our designs.
Anglo-Saxons and Scots - History
For our next learning experience, we will be exploring Anglo-Saxon Britain. We will be doing this through three main enquiries: 'How did Britain change after the Romans left?', 'What was the main cause of the end to the Anglo-Saxon rule?' and 'How hard was it to invade and settle in Britain?' Investigating the lives of the Anglo-Saxons, we will explore the impact the continuous raids at the time had on Britain. As well as analysing how the Anglo-Saxon rule eventually came to an end.
We had a look at how the Anglo-Saxons are shown in imagery as well as how they lived based on what we could research.
We had a look at the Anglo-Saxon timeline.
Today we worked with maps, locating where the Anglo-Saxons came from and where they settled.
Today we were looking at Anglo-Saxon artefacts.
App Design - Computing
For our first Learning Experience we will be creating our own language apps. We will be creating interactive apps which will include a quiz, testing the users' Spanish. The children will be designing their apps keeping in mind how to make the app user-friendly as well as atheistically pleasing. The children will then have the opportunity to test and use their peers' apps.
